Devi Mahatmyam

The Devi Mahatmyam is a sacred book of the Hindus. To those who worship God as Mother, it is the most important text. It is considered a garland of mantras. It is said to contain seven hundred mantras and hence is called Sptasati. Since it narrates the glory of the Goddess Chandi, the book is also called Chandi. It is next only to the Gita in popularity. Till recent times, it used to be religiously read daily by many, especially in Bengal and Kerala. It is considered very effective in conferring worldly prosperity when read with devotion and proper rituals. When pleased with the worship, the Goddess bestows liberation also on the devotee. Thus, to attain worldly success and final liberation, the worship of Durga through the formal reading of her glories contained in this book is considered very effective.
